The Next Accord
Posted: January 12, 2012 | by: Blog Editor | source: Wall Street Journal
The Accord is starting off 2012 right by losing a few pounds. The new Accord has a more athletic build, sits lower to the ground and more tech.
Honda Motor Co. has sent its best-selling Honda Accord model to the gym to bust off a few pounds. Honda on Tuesday unveiled a thinly disguised prototype of its next generation Accord coupe, which will be launched along with a new Accord sedan this fall. John Mendel, executive vice president of Honda's U.S. Sales operation says the new Accord will put Honda back in the game. Among the new Accord's key attributes, he said: it's smaller on the outside, a little lower to the ground and lighter. "It's stylish and more athletic," Mr. Mendel said at the unveiling today. With new, direct injection engines, the newly svelte Accord should get "class leading fuel economy." Honda is hoping to boost U.S. Accord sales above 300,000 cars a year in the first year of the new model, despite efforts by Ford Motor Co. Like some rivals, Honda will offer a plug in hybrid version of the Accord - the better to score credits with new U.S. Fuel economy rules. "We think the technology is now approaching the point..where it doesn't compromise the consumer," Mr. Mendel says.

J.D. Power & Associates Most Awarded Manufacturer
Posted: August 23, 2011 | by: Blog Editor | source: Honda.com
Honda won more awards by the highly acclaimed J.D. Power and Associates than any other manufacturer for 2011.
Honda leads industry with seven segment-leading models, more than any other brand The Honda brand earned its best-ever ranking in J.D. Power and Associates' Initial Quality Study (IQS) for 2011, finishing second among all surveyed brands, including premium makes, the company announced today. Honda also led the industry with seven models earning the highest initial quality ranking in their respective segments, including its top-selling Accord and Civic models. In the manufacturing realm, the 2011 study recognized three Honda plants for superior quality, including Honda's newest U.S. auto plant in Greensburg, Ind. Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, producing the Civic Sedan, was one of only three plants around the world to earn the Platinum Plant Quality Award. The Suzuka, Japan plant, line 1, earned a Silver Plant Quality Award, Asia Pacific (tie), for production of Civic and Insight, while the East Liberty, Ohio, plant took home a Bronze Plant Quality Award, North/South America, for production of the Accord Crosstour, CR-V and Element. "Creating products of the highest quality and value is the foundation of our business, and it begins with a deep understanding of the customer," said Tetsuo Iwamura, president & CEO of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "These results are an important demonstration of our focus on the customer and the tireless efforts put forth by Honda associates throughout our organization—in R&D, in manufacturing and in sales—to exceed their high expectations of Honda and Acura." Of the seven Honda models earning the highest initial quality score in their segment – the most segment leaders of any brand – five were manufactured in North America: the Civic (compact car); the Element (compact crossover SUV—followed by the CR-V in second place); the Accord (midsize car); the Accord Crosstour (midsize crossover SUV); and the Ridgeline (midsize pickup). Those five models were joined on the 2011 segment leader list by the Insight hybrid (compact car, tie) and Honda Fit (sub-compact car). Honda automobiles made in North America are produced using domestic and globally-sourced parts. J.D. Power and Associates' Initial Quality Study serves as an important tool for consumers in evaluating the quality and design of new vehicles. Since 1987, J.D. Power and Associates has been surveying owners to measure the initial quality of new vehicles after the first 90 days of ownership.

Can't find the right make or model you want, and you're worried incentives will expire? With the Honda Promise Program you can wait to take delivery and still get the same great incentives.
Honda Motor Co. on Wednesday told its U.S. dealers it is starting a new incentive policy aimed at letting customers know they can purchase cars even if the models they are seeking are out of stock. Honda said it will honor current incentives even if customers have to wait weeks until the exact models they buy become available. Honda launched the new effort - called the Honda Promise -- on Wednesday, along with other incentives, in an attempt to boost sales. The Honda Promise offer runs through Aug. 1. Under the new program, dealers can assure customers that they can wait to take delivery on cars and still get the same sales incentives that the company is offering now. Honda also will agree to extend expiring leases by 12 months for customers using Honda Financial Services. Honda has said that its production should return to nearly normal levels by August.
CR-V is Still in a League of its Own
Posted: June 28, 2011 | by: Blog Editor | source: Suwannee Democrat
Back when your choices were a bulky SUV, or your typical sedan/coupe, Honda decided to combine the two. Now every car-maker has a Crossover, but no one has the CR-V.
The Honda CR-V spawned a revolution when it was released back in the Jurassic period. It was a time when SUV dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Big, heavy vehicles like the Ford Explorer were the dominant species, shaking the ground and guzzling fuel with their massive, aging, body-on-frame designs. Along came the CR-V as a Darwinian milestone - a mammal in a land of giant reptiles. Crossovers now dot the landscape - the CR-V isn't the only mammal out there anymore - but the 2011 model shows the CR-V stays true to its origins and remains competitive. Unlike true SUVs, the original CR-V was built on a lightweight car chassis but still looked vaguely like the bulky Explorer. The result was a vehicle that gave you the best of both worlds - and a sales hit for Honda. Since the CR-V was built like a car, it drove like a car. It had a zippy, precise feeling that SUVs couldn't match. And its efficient, four-cylinder engine got far better gas mileage. It also retained the best parts of SUVs: their spacious cargo area, high ride height to give drivers a better view of the road, and some styling machismo that plain ol' family cars lacked. It was such a success, in fact, that many of today's most popular vehicles can trace their DNA to the first CR-V. Countless copycats are a great thing for buyers, who have a long list of excellent crossovers to pick from today. So why should anyone still consider the CR-V in a modern automotive ecosystem that's overpopulated with crossovers? The first reason should be obvious. It's a Honda. Honda is really the only mainstream company left with a long-term reputation for building bulletproof cars. Toyota has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons since 2008. American and Korean brands have made huge leaps in the last five years - in some ways they feel like they're built to a more luxurious standard than Honda's - but that's a recent development. The world is still waiting to see if they can keep it up. The second reason is the CR-V remains true to its roots. Thanks to the competition the CR-V helped create, crossovers come in all sorts of flavors today. You can buy high-performance crossovers, luxury crossovers, efficient crossovers and stripped-down, cheap crossovers. Honda easily could have made its crossover compete for one of those niches when redesigning the latest CR-V. Instead, Honda preserved the CR-V's everyman personality, which made it a hit from the beginning. The latest CR-V has a smooth ride, precise steering and great, grabby brakes. The suspension feeling is almost a carbon copy of the Accord, which is a perfect benchmark. And it's just sporty enough to be fun without being uncomfortable. The engine is an excellent match for this car. Some crossovers have more power; others give you better mileage. But few hit the sweet spot as perfectly as the CR-V's 2.4-liter engine, which makes 180 horsepower and is rated for 24 mpg on the highway. In fact, I'm beginning to wonder if scientists a million years from now will discover a CR-V encrusted in amber that looks just like their futuristic CR-Vs. Like the mosquito, some designs are so well-suited that they can thrive for eons with minimal evolutionary changes.
